From the series “Mandrake” inspired by the medieval symbol of the mandrake root, that was believed to have both magical and medicinal powers. The mandrake was connected with witchcraft as well, perhaps because of its use by female midwives and healers for fertility and childbirth. Another myth was that mandrake plants could be found at the foot of gallows, where the semen of hanged men had fallen. It was said that witches would gather these plants to impregnate themselves.
I run the ceramic brand Story Clay together with ceramicist Marie Torstensson. With handpainted ceramics we communicate stories about cultural and historical sites. Our mission is to create exclusive and detailed handmade ceramics, to be passed on and cared for over generations.
My name is Emma Ekstam and I have worked as an artist and illustrator since graduating from Konstfack (Stockholm) in 2014. I come from a background in scenicpainting (Copenhagen) and decor painting (churches mostly) and I like to depict aspects of my daily life via symbols that I find browsing museums and medieval churches. Being in constant search for details that reflect life in this day and age is a big part of my creative process.
