Guide to frame sizes

 

Some sizes are more common than others. Frames in standard sizes are cheaper because they are mass produced. They are also called switching frames. If you need a frame in a special size (non-standard measurements), you must invest in a custom-made frame from a frame specialist.

Here is a list of the most common frame sizes

Common frame sizes are either indicated in centimeters (cm.) or A-sizes (standard paper sizes).

• 14,8 x 21 cm (A5)
• 21 x 29,7 cm (A4)
• 29,7 x 42 cm (A3)
• 30 x 40 cm
• 40 x 50 cm
• 50 x 50 cm

• 59,4 x 84,1 cm (A1)
• 70 x 100 cm

Frame quality

Price and quality are linked and determined by:

• Size (large frames are difficult to produce and ship around to stores and customers).
• Material (aluminum is usually more expensive than wood).
• Glass (Real glass is standard in high-quality framing).
• The joints (there is a difference in the quality of the corner joints in expensive and cheap frames and how robust they are).

Solid frames, aluminum frames or laminated frames.

Poster frames are often made of either wood or aluminium. Aluminum is often more expensive than wood as it is difficult to produce. At Kræss, we like aluminum frames because they are slim and elegant. Solid wood frames are also more expensive than laminated frames. Solid frames are cut directly from the trunk of the tree (e.g. oak), whereas laminated frames are often made of pine or MDF which is covered with foil that looks like e.g. oak. Solid wood frames also have knots and differences in color depending on which wood is used, whereas laminated frames are more similar in expression.

Acrylic glass (plexi) or real glass.

High-quality frames are produced with real glass, which is standard in good framing and gives a crystal-clear image. Some frames are also available with acrylic glass (plastic) and it is becoming increasingly popular because it can easily be sent by freight. Acrylic glass is often the only thing you can buy when you shop for frames online or buy frames in department stores such as Føtex, Bilka or Ikea.

We always recommend real glass, as most people prioritize the clarity of the glass over possible reflections. But acrylic glass can be a good alternative for e.g. children's rooms or other places where it can't always "hang in peace". In addition, it can be transported without splintering.

Glass quality

Real glass is the standard in quality framing, but acrylic glass (also known as plexiglass) is becoming increasingly popular because it can be easily shipped when you shop in webshops. Acrylic glass is often the only thing you can buy when shopping for frames online. Physical stores often offer real glass. Although real glass is preferable, it is not necessarily more expensive.

Advantages of real glass:
– Standard in high-quality framing.
– Crystal clear.
– Can be easily washed (does not scratch).

Advantages of acrylic glass:
– Stronger and more flexible than glass.
– Good for e.g. children's rooms or bathrooms where the glass must not shatter.
– Can be transported with freight companies.
– May have anti-reflective properties (strong light sources do not disturb).
