Frames are available in many sizes, from very small photo frames (A6) to huge frames (A0).

Some sizes are more common than others. Frames in standard sizes are cheaper because they are mass produced. They are also called switching frames. If you need a frame in a special (non-standard) size, you must invest in a custom-made frame from a frame specialist.

Here is a list of sizes we have:

Common frame sizes are either indicated in centimeters (cm.) or A-sizes (standard paper sizes).

  • 10,5 x 14,8 cm (A6).
  • 14,8 x 21 cm (A5).
  • 21 x 29,7 cm. (A4) – most common size for small frames.
  • 29,7 x 42 cm. (A3) – most common size for normal size frames.
  • 30 x 40 cm.
  • 40 x 50 cm.
  • 50 x 50 cm.
  • 42 x 59,4 cm. (A2) – most common size for large frames.
  • 50 x 70 cm.
  • 59,4 x 84,1 cm. (A1)
  • 70 x 100 cm.
  • 84,1 x 118,9 cm (A0).

Frame quality

Price and quality are linked and determined by:

  • Size (large frames are difficult to produce and ship around to stores and customers).
  • Material (aluminum is usually more expensive than wood).
  • Glass (Real glass is standard in high-quality framing).
  • The joints (there is a difference in the quality of the corner joints in expensive and cheap frames and how robust they are).

Solid frames, aluminum frames or laminated frames.

Poster frames are often made of either wood or aluminium. Aluminum is often more expensive than wood as it is difficult to produce. At Kræss, we like aluminum frames because they are slim and elegant. Solid wood frames are also more expensive than laminated frames. Solid frames are cut directly from the trunk of the tree (e.g. oak), whereas laminated frames are often made of pine or MDF which is covered with foil that looks like e.g. oak. Solid wood frames also have knots and differences in color depending on which wood is used, whereas laminated frames are more similar in expression.

Acrylic glass (plexi) or real glass.

High-quality frames are produced with real glass, which is standard in good framing and gives a crystal-clear image. Some frames are also available with acrylic glass (plastic) and it is becoming increasingly popular because it can easily be sent by freight. Acrylic glass is often the only thing you can buy when you shop for frames online or buy frames in department stores such as Føtex, Bilka or Ikea.

In Kræss, we sell both frames with real glass and acrylic glass. But we cannot ship large frames with real glass - instead we send the frame with good quality acrylic glass.

We always recommend real glass, as most people prioritize the clarity of the glass over possible reflections. But acrylic glass can be a good alternative for e.g. children's rooms or other places where it can't always "hang in peace". In addition, it can be transported without splintering.

Glass quality

Real glass is the standard in quality framing, but acrylic glass (also known as Plexiglas) is becoming increasingly popular because it can be easily shipped when you shop on webshops. Acrylic glass is often the only thing you can buy when shopping for frames online. Physical stores often offer real glass. Although real glass is preferable, it is not necessarily more expensive.

Advantages of real glass:
– Standard in high-quality framing.
– Crystal clear.
– Can be easily washed (does not scratch).

Disadvantages of real glass:
– Breaks/splinters on impact.
– Large frames with real glass cannot be transported with freight companies.

Advantages of acrylic glass:
– Stronger and more flexible than glass.
– Good for e.g. children's rooms or bathrooms where the glass must not shatter.
– Can be transported with freight companies.
– May have anti-reflective properties (strong light sources do not disturb).

Disadvantages of acrylic glass:
– Difficult to clean (avoid scratches and static electricity).
- Big difference in quality (Ikea sells, for example, cheap and thin acrylic glass in their frames, which makes the motif indistinct).

Passepartout

Some posters and pictures look great with a white margin (passepartout) around the picture. Some images already have a white margin around the image in the print itself when you buy it. But if you want to make the white margin yourself, you can choose a frame that is slightly larger (5-15 cm.) than the picture and buy a white passepartout to put on top and around the picture.

However, it can be expensive and difficult to find a passepartout that fits or to have one cut to special measurements. If you don't want to spend a lot of time and money, we have an easy and cheap trick: buy a frame that is slightly larger than your picture. Frames always come with an insert paper when you buy the one that is white on the back. Open the frame, turn the insert paper over and place your picture in the middle - use a flat piece of tape so it doesn't move when you hang it up. Viola! Then you have a white margin around the image.

About changing frames to standard sizes

Changing frames for standard sizes

Shift frames are frames that are mass produced and therefore the price is low. However, toggle frames are only available for images in standard sizes and they are available in both high and low quality. Inserting images into toggle frames is also easy and anyone can do it.

Changing frame size and approx. price:

  • 10,5 x 14,8 cm. (A6)  – from 60.- kr.
  • 14,8 x 21 cm. (A5) – from 80.- kr.
  • 21 x 29,7 cm. (A4) – from 100.- kr.
  • 29,7 x 42 cm. (A3) – from 150.- kr.
  • 30 x 30 cm. – from 150.- kr.
  • 30 x 40 cm. – from 150.- kr.

Shifter frame quality

Quality and price often go hand in hand when you buy changing frames. As a general rule, you can often find changing frames in either solid wood or with foil. Frames with foil are cheaper.

Solid wood frames are cut directly from the type of wood (e.g. oak).

Frames with Oak foil are made of pine and coated with a foil that looks like, for example, Oak or Walnut wood.

As a starting point, the untrained eye cannot tell the difference between the two types from a distance, but you can feel the difference - the foil is smooth in contrast to the "raw solid wood". Solid wood is also more often a bit darker in appearance and has more blemishes.

The big difference is the price. Pine frames with foil are cheaper to produce.
